BDM 226 Modelling hands

For me modelling the hands has been a challenge. I have come across the issue of hands looking flat and sausage like, because my characters hands are shown close up on screen I feel it is important that they look believable and aesthetically proportionate.

Fingers first. My first attempt created callus ridden sausages with a particularly strange looking thumb

The full hand also looked flat and rectangular I was not happy with this result so decided to try a different approach by using reference images.

I am happier with this final hand as the fingers are characteristic and the thumb is in a more believable position

BDM206 Eraserhead Review

Eraserhead
Director: David Lynch

Eraserhead was possibly the most uncomfortable movie I have seen. I think this was due to the long, drawn out pauses and the lack of dialogue. I found it very difficult to pay attention to the whole film as the story line was jagged and disconcerting. However, the acting and camera angles were well done. Jack Nance's ability to portray his emotions without dialogue was impressive even though the movie itself made very little sense to me. I also thought the music was well suited to the film if the intention of the director was to make his audience as uncomfortable as possible.

Time Period: 1930-1980's

How does Surrealist film differ from Western film conventions?

Surrealism is an attempt to connect reality with the world of the subconscious mind to create an extreme reality where other levels of the consciousness and meaning are revealed. Surrealist cinema signified an incoherent dream experience. This differs from Western film conventions as Western Films attempt to portray realism wherever possible, to capture the audience and entice them into believing they are part of the story. Surrealism avoids this as the experience is to whimsical to be considered real by the audience.

Discuss how the films of a contemporary film director or animator have been influenced by surrealist film movement.

Joshua Oppenheimer
The Act of Killing (2013)
The Look of Silence(2015)

Joshua Oppenheimer uses bright colours to portray the surrealist film movement. His movies are shot blurry and bright to imitate the dream-like state that old surrealist movies enduced, however, with the use of colour Joshua's style is slightly different

BDM226 3D Character, first build

Will have to redo hands and head, these have been the hardest to model in Maya

Character design and Bio BDM226

This is my 3D character design for Oogie

Age: 4
Gender: Male
Home:  State Museum
Ethnicity: Prehistoric Cave Boy
Strengths: Curious, outgoing, creative
Weakness: Clumsy, lonely, afraid of the dark

Not every boy can say they are part of a museum exhibit. But for Oogie this is a reality. Of course it does help that Oogie is happily oblivious to his state of entrapment. Regrettably for the small cave boy, he was created with a burning sense of curiosity that can only be satiated by exploring his exciting world. Oogie has always gazed at the horizon and wondered just how far the world stretched.       Unfortunately, living in a museum exhibit gives new meaning to the saying it’s a small world.
