How does Surrealist film differ from Western film conventions?

Surrealism is an attempt to connect reality with the world of the subconscious mind to create an extreme reality where other levels of the consciousness and meaning are revealed. Surrealist cinema signified an incoherent dream experience. This differs from Western film conventions as Western Films attempt to portray realism wherever possible, to capture the audience and entice them into believing they are part of the story. Surrealism avoids this as the experience is to whimsical to be considered real by the audience.

Discuss how the films of a contemporary film director or animator have been influenced by surrealist film movement.

Joshua Oppenheimer
The Act of Killing (2013)
The Look of Silence(2015)

Joshua Oppenheimer uses bright colours to portray the surrealist film movement. His movies are shot blurry and bright to imitate the dream-like state that old surrealist movies enduced, however, with the use of colour Joshua's style is slightly different
